Oh man. Burr’s going to get barbecued for this.

I have already read You or Someone Like You and have been thinking about it for days–always a good sign. I am in a mixed marriage similar to Anne’s and Howard’s, which (including pre-marriage cohabitation, etc.) has lasted twenty-four years. I also worked in the film industry and met my husband in his hometown of Los Angeles. I was raised Episcopalian, but it didn’t “take.” My husband was raised in a family which is religiously reform—but culturally orthodox—Jewish. My initial thought, upon finishing the book, was “Oh, man. Burr’s going to get barbecued for this.” I still wouldn’t be surprised. Knowing that culture as much as someone not born to it can, I commend Chandler’s courage in writing this book. In all the endless discussions and contemplations I’ve experienced, I’ve never come across the idea that constant arguing—what a rabbi I knew called “wrestling with the Angel”—IS the modern version of Judaism. I thought, “of course!” What an astute observation. Larry David’s HBO show is also a good example of this.

I’ve just finished reading “You or Someone Like You”. I felt recognition, fear, peace, yearning, hope. I responded to the parents with their beloved child, and much else. I thank you for this disruptive, cathartic, tender story.
